River Edge Gallery, a gallery featuring fine contemporary art to Northern Milwaukee, Ozaukee County and beyond, announces the opening of Madison artist Teresa Getty’s new exhibition Friday, February 8th. The show, entitled Songs, Sonnets and Stolen Lines, is a collection of ethereal, surrealistic images in multimedia. The exhibition will open with a reception with the artist Friday, February 8th from 5-8 pm. The show runs through Saturday, April 6th, 2013.
Her work addresses the relationship and perceived dichotomy of the biological and mechanical worlds. The process of forming and reforming her works builds physical and emotional depth to the images. A combination of silver point, oils, gouache, acrylic ink and graphite are used to form the images against a white background.
“I am compelled to paint about these things because of Miranda, my medically challenged daughter” explains Getty. “Her life highlights a universal experience of temporality and transformation.”
Getty moved between scientific and creative fields before receiving her BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. She received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007. She teaches at UW Madison, is a docent at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Contemporary Art, and conducts creative workshops at the Madison Public Library.
“We’re excited to present Teresa’s unique and insightful work to the community,” says Kathleen Tatterson, River Edge Gallery Director. “There’s a fantastic, whimsical quality to her works but they also have a message and a story to tell.”
As we ring in the new year, please join us in the gallery Saturday January 12th, 1-4 PM. Come enjoy Stephanie’s colorful depictions of “east meets west” in her solo show “Middle Kingdoms” and learn more about her motivations and techniques for forming these paintings.
