“Marking Maps/Mapping Marks”: Paintings by Milwaukee Artist Daniel Fleming

We are delighted to present the works of Milwaukee artist Daniel Fleming February 28th-April 26, 2014.  The exhibition will open with a reception with the artist Friday, February 28th, 5-8 PM in the gallery and will close following our Third Anniversary Reception Friday April 25th 5-7 PM.

Fleming approaches his paintings with an unparalleled enthusiasm and energy, exploring a variety of social and political issues and displaying perspectives and ideas that many would not otherwise encounter. “I take pride in creating work that spans various religious, political and cultural boundaries,” he explains. “This creates a discussion and narrative that informs the viewer of the vast world around them.”

Perspectives on Daniel’s art in his own words:

“I seek to display the energy and excitement with which I approach my work, the impact and emotion I hope to convey to the viewer, and the strong underlying narrative with which I hope to create an ever-developing discussion. Through this combination of viewpoints, you not only are invited into the thoughts and questions of the artist, but you’re also led through a vast wilderness of differing opinions, investigations into new ideas, and explorations of beliefs and realities you would not normally confront.”

“Up, Down!” – Melissa Dorn Richards Exhibition Opening November 7th

Up, Down! opens Thursday, November 7th and features the paintings of Milwaukee artist Melissa Dorn Richards. Her work, influenced by her training in sculpture, is enjoyed in many private and corporate collections across Wisconsin.  Melissa will be joining us in the gallery the following Friday, November 15th, 5-8 PM for an opening reception where you will have an opportunity to learn more about Melissa’s vision and process.

The exhibition includes paintings from Melissa’s Roller Coaster series. “I’m usually inspired by something I see,” explains Richards Dorn. “The series started on a drive back from Chicago, where I could see Six Flags out the window. I was struck by it because I was in the midst of another series and thinking a lot about man-made landscapes.”

Melissa’s artistic influences include Mark Rothko, Milton Avery and Ann Truit. Her work is similarly abstract with somewhat minimal collage, yet her process is very controlled. “I do pastel drawings first, and then move on to the painting,” she adds. “Rarely does the painting stray much from the drawing.”

She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1996 at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD). She is a resident artist with Plaid Tuba Studio in Milwaukee. Her work has shown throughout Wisconsin and the US, including most recently Frank Juarez Gallery in Sheboygan, WI.

“We’re excited to present Melissa’s colorful and breathtaking work our community,” remarks Kathy Tatterson, Gallery Director. “Her exhibition is one more example of world class art right in our backyard.” The show will run through Saturday, January 4.  River Edge Gallery is open Thursday-Friday 12-5, Saturday 12-4.
